Joda-Time

Hello ABQJUGites!

This is a meeting announcement for our next ABQJUG meeting. Our meeting will be held on July 7, 2010 at UNM Continuing Education South Building from 3:00 - 5:30 PM. The exact room number is not set yet, but we do have a room set and ready to go. This month's topic is Joda-Time with a Brief Introduction to the History of the World.

One of the problems with Java, as well as other programming languages, is programming for date and time. It isn't as straight-forward as people might think. Most programmer headaches come when they are programming for different time zones and for different chronologies. It becomes very precarious when Date, Time, and Calendars objects in programming languages are mutable. It becomes even more of a nightmare in standard Calendar APIs when you are trying to remember if January is 0 as opposed to 1 or if February is 1 as opposed to 2.

Java has a terrible history of Date/Time/Calendar APIs and the JCP is in process of remedying the problem by making Joda-Time a Java standard. Joda-Time is very well researched. It is an immutable API to overcome much of Java's original Date, Time, and Calendar design.

This presentation will include a little world history, current ISO date time standards, and current Java Date/Calendar/Time APIs. We’ll then take a look at Joda-Time, including how to integrate with Java Date and Calendar. Then, you’ll be able to see for yourself why Joda-Time is a far better alternative to the standard API for your Java, Groovy, and Scala development.

Hope to see you at the JUG!
